Our Review Methodology: How FHINZ Rates NZ Gambling Sites
Every score, star rating and ranking on FHINZ comes from the same transparent process. We sign up, deposit real NZD, play, and request a withdrawal at every operator we recommend, then score them across five weighted pillars. This page explains exactly how that works — it's the standard behind every review on the site.
The five scoring pillars
We rate each casino, bookmaker and crypto casino out of 5 on five pillars. Each pillar is weighted, because some things matter more to a New Zealand player than others — a fast withdrawal is worth more than a flashy home page. The weighted scores combine into the overall rating you see on our pages.
1. Bonus value — 25%
Not the headline number, the real value. We read wagering requirements, max-cashout caps, game weightings, minimum deposits, expiry windows and whether the offer is quoted in NZD. A "$5,000 bonus" with 60× wagering and a low cashout cap scores worse than a modest offer with fair terms.
2. Payout speed — 25%
The single most important thing to Kiwi players. We time how long a real withdrawal takes to reach a NZ bank account or crypto wallet, check pending/reversal windows, weekend delays and withdrawal limits, and note whether KYC is done up front or sprung on you at cashout.
3. Safety & licensing — 20%
Curaçao, Anjouan, Malta (MGA) or Tobique licensing, fair and readable terms, SSL and data handling, a clean complaints record, and honest advertising. Operators that hide behind unfair T&Cs or have a pattern of confiscations are marked down hard.
4. Game & market range — 15%
Pokies, live dealer and table games from reputable studios for casinos; the depth and pricing of markets for bookmakers, especially the sports Kiwis bet on — rugby, league, cricket, netball and football. Provably-fair titles count for crypto sites.
5. NZ localization — 15%
Genuine NZD support (not just a display currency), NZ-friendly payment methods that actually work in 2026 — bank transfer, Visa/Mastercard, Paysafecard, e-wallets and crypto — honest handling of POLi's decline, English-language support in NZ-friendly hours, and awareness of NZ law and tax.
Our real-money testing process
We don't score operators from a spreadsheet or a press release. Before a site earns a place on FHINZ, a member of our editorial team completes the full player journey with genuine New Zealand dollars:
- Register and verify. We open a real account and complete identity verification, recording how strict and how fast the KYC process is.
- Deposit in NZD. We fund the account using the methods Kiwis use — bank transfer, Visa/Mastercard, Paysafecard, e-wallets and crypto — and record which succeed, which fail, and any fees or currency conversion.
- Claim and read the bonus. We take the welcome offer and read every clause: wagering, weighting, caps and expiry. We work out the effective value, not the advertised one.
- Play the games. We test the lobby across pokies, live dealer and table games (or the sportsbook's markets and live betting), checking loading, stability and studio quality.
- Withdraw. The decisive test. We request a cashout and time exactly how long it takes to arrive, noting any pending periods, extra verification or limits imposed at the last moment.
- Test support. We contact customer support with a real question to gauge responsiveness and competence.
Only after all six steps do we assign scores. We also re-run withdrawal and payment tests on listed sites over time, because an operator that paid quickly last year may not this year.
When we blocklist a casino
Some operators don't just score badly — they earn a place on our blocklist, and we actively warn Kiwis away from them. We blocklist a site when we find a clear pattern of any of the following:
- Refusing, voiding or endlessly delaying legitimate withdrawals.
- Confiscating winnings using vague or retroactive "bonus abuse" clauses.
- Ignoring self-exclusion or responsible-gambling requests.
- Predatory or misleading terms, or advertising that breaches NZ rules.
- Operating with no valid licence, or a licence it misrepresents.
- A consistent volume of credible, verifiable player complaints — including the reader reports you send us via our contact page.
How often we update
Gambling offers, terms and payout performance change constantly, so a review is only as good as its last check. We re-verify our main ranking pages on a monthly cadence and update individual pages sooner when something material changes — a bonus is pulled, terms shift, a payout-complaint pattern emerges, or the NZ regulatory picture moves (for example as the DIA licensing regime rolls out toward Q1 2027). Every page shows a "last updated" date and a named author so you always know how current it is; this page was last updated 14 July 2026.
Independence and disclosure
FHINZ funds its work through affiliate commissions, disclosed clearly on every commercial page. Commission never buys a ranking, a rating or protection from criticism. Rankings are decided by our editorial team using the pillars above — full detail on our about page. This methodology is linked from every review as our commitment to you that the score you're reading was earned, not bought.
